Early Life and Playing Career
Sherrone Banfield Moore was born on February 3, 1986, in Derby, Kansas. He played offensive guard at Butler Community College (2004–2005) before transferring to the Oklahoma Sooners (2006–2007), appearing in 14 games as a college teammate of Adrian Peterson.
He earned a B.A. in Communications from Oklahoma and a master's in Sports Administration from Louisville.
Coaching Career
Assistant Roles
Moore coached tight ends at Louisville (2012–2013) and Central Michigan (2014–2017), where he also served as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.
Michigan Assistant (2018–2023)
He joined Michigan as tight ends coach in 2018, then coached the offensive line and served as co-offensive coordinator. His lines won the Joe Moore Award back-to-back in 2021–22 — the first school ever to do so. He also served as acting head coach for four games in 2023 during Jim Harbaugh's suspensions, going 4–0 on the field.
Head Coach (2024–2025)
On January 26, 2024, Moore was named the 21st head coach in Michigan program history — the first African American head coach in program history — signing a five-year, $27.5 million contract.
His 2024 team went 8–5, highlighted by an upset of #2 Ohio State and a bowl win over Alabama. The 2025 team went 9–3 in the regular season.
Firing (December 2025)
On December 10, 2025, Michigan fired Moore with cause after a university investigation found credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. He was detained the same day amid an assault investigation; in March 2026 he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors, and in April 2026 was sentenced to 18 months probation.
Wife and Family
Moore married Kelli Moore in July 2015 (he proposed in December 2014). They have three daughters: Shiloh, Solei, and Sadie. Kelli has kept a largely private profile while regularly attending Michigan games during his tenure.
Net Worth
Moore's five-year contract was worth $27.5 million, but his firing "with cause" put buyout payments in doubt. No reliable published net worth estimate exists; figures on bio sites should be treated as unverified.
